Year 4 is the foundation year for confident 11 Plus preparation. At this stage, the priority is not rushing children into full exam papers. The strongest preparation is a steady routine that builds reading, vocabulary, maths fluency, spelling, comprehension, and problem-solving confidence over time.

Why Year 4 Preparation Matters
Year 4 gives children time to strengthen the core skills they will need later in Year 5 and Year 6. A child who reads widely, knows their times tables securely, understands vocabulary, and can tackle unfamiliar maths problems is much better placed when formal 11 Plus practice begins.
This approach follows the same principle set out by 11 Plus Guide: Year 4 preparation should focus on solid foundations and a simple routine, not on moving too quickly into timed exam pressure.
What Students Cover in Year 4 11 Plus
In the Super Thinkers Year 4 11+ group, students work on the building blocks that support grammar, selective-school, and independent-school entrance preparation.
- Reading fluency: regular reading, discussion, and confidence with age-appropriate texts.
- Vocabulary: word meanings, synonyms, antonyms, spelling patterns, and accurate word choice.
- Comprehension: retrieving information, inference, explaining evidence, and understanding unfamiliar passages.
- Creative writing: sentence control, description, planning, structure, punctuation, and editing.
- Times tables: fast recall, mixed practice, division facts, and applying tables under light pressure.
- Mental maths: the four operations, number fluency, accuracy, and efficient working methods.
- Problem solving: worded questions, choosing the right method, checking answers, and building resilience.
- Reasoning readiness: vocabulary-rich verbal reasoning and pattern awareness, introduced carefully when core skills are secure.

Reading and Vocabulary
Reading is one of the most important parts of Year 4 preparation. Children need time to meet new words in context, talk about meaning, and build stamina with longer texts. We encourage families to keep reading separate from exam pressure so that children continue to enjoy books while also developing stronger comprehension skills.
A useful home pattern is daily reading, with one or two paired-reading sessions each week where an adult listens, asks questions, and discusses vocabulary. In lessons, we reinforce this through comprehension work, discussion, spelling, and written responses.
Maths Foundations
Many Year 5 calculation mistakes start with weak Year 4 foundations. Times tables, division facts, place value, and mental methods need to become automatic so students can spend their energy on the problem itself rather than basic recall.
Students practise short, focused maths tasks that build accuracy and flexibility. This includes mixed times tables, four-operations fluency, worded problems, multi-step questions, and explaining how they know an answer is reasonable.

Reasoning Without Rushing
Verbal and non-verbal reasoning can be useful, but in Year 4 it should not crowd out reading, vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, and maths. We introduce reasoning carefully, making sure students understand the thinking behind question types rather than relying on speed or guesswork.
Timed 11 Plus papers are not the main focus at this stage. Children benefit more from learning how to approach questions calmly, explain their thinking, and correct mistakes properly.
A Simple Weekly Rhythm
Families do not need an overwhelming timetable. The most useful pattern is short, regular practice:
- Read most days and discuss vocabulary from the book.
- Practise times tables for a few minutes at a time, including mixed recall.
- Complete one comprehension task each week.
- Do one spelling or vocabulary activity each week.
- Include short mental maths and problem-solving practice.
- Review mistakes calmly so children understand what to do next time.
How Super Thinkers Supports Year 4 Students
Our Year 4 11+ group gives children a structured small-group setting with weekly teaching, targeted practice, homework guidance, and clear parent feedback. The aim is to build confidence and strong habits before the more intensive exam preparation phase.
