Year 8 is the point where KS3 students need to turn Year 7 foundations into stronger, more independent habits. The work is still pre-GCSE, but the expectations become more precise: students need better written methods, clearer reasoning, stronger algebra, more confidence with ratio and proportion, and the stamina to solve multi-step questions.

It starts by revisiting core number skills, then moves through geometry, algebra, sequences, ratio, compound measures, data, probability, volume, surface area and transformations.
What Students Cover in KS3 Year 8

Number, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
Year 8 students continue to strengthen calculation fluency. This includes the four operations with integers, decimals, fractions and mixed numbers, including positive and negative values. Students also revisit factors, multiples, prime numbers, highest common factor, lowest common multiple, powers, roots, rounding and estimation.
Fractions, decimals and percentages become more demanding in Year 8. Students need to compare forms, convert between them, calculate percentage change, understand percentages greater than 100%, solve original-value problems, and use simple interest in financial contexts. Weakness here can affect ratio, algebra, geometry and data later in the year.
Angles, Constructions, Perimeter and Area
Geometry in Year 8 asks students to work more accurately and explain more clearly. Students cover angles in parallel lines, alternate and corresponding angles, angles in triangles, angle sums in polygons, and properties of regular polygons.
They also practise construction skills such as perpendicular bisectors, perpendicular lines and angle bisectors. Perimeter and area work extends to triangles, parallelograms, trapezia, circles and composite shapes, so students need to choose the correct formula, use units accurately, and set out multi-step working.

Algebra, Equations and Sequences
Year 8 algebra builds on the notation introduced earlier in KS3. Students substitute values into formulae and expressions, use the language of terms, factors, expressions, equations and inequalities, and manipulate expressions by collecting like terms, expanding brackets and taking out common factors.
Students also solve linear equations that require rearrangement, generate terms from sequence rules, recognise arithmetic sequences, and begin finding nth terms. This is often where students need calm, repeated practice because algebra becomes harder to follow if earlier notation is insecure.
Ratio, Proportion and Speed
Ratio and proportion receive greater emphasis in Year 8. Students divide quantities into part:part and part:whole ratios, understand multiplicative relationships, and solve direct and inverse proportion problems.
They also work with compound measures such as speed, unit pricing and density. These topics are important because they combine number fluency with reading accuracy: students must understand what the question is asking before choosing a method.
Data, Averages and Probability
Students learn to describe, interpret and compare distributions using suitable graphs, charts and tables. This includes frequency tables, bar charts, pie charts, pictograms, grouped and ungrouped data, measures of average, range and outliers.
Probability work includes understanding that probabilities sum to 1, using tables, grids and Venn diagrams, building sample spaces, and calculating theoretical probabilities for single and combined events.
Volume, Surface Area and Transformations
Later Year 8 work includes volume and surface area for cuboids, cubes, prisms and cylinders, as well as properties of 3-D solids such as faces, edges, vertices and surfaces.
Students also study transformations, including translations, rotations, reflections and enlargements. These topics need accurate diagrams, careful language and confidence with coordinates, scale and shape properties.
Assessment, Feedback and Study Habits
The Chace plan includes regular half-term and end-of-year assessment points. That matters because Year 8 students need to learn how to revise, identify gaps, correct mistakes and return to topics over time.
