GCSE results are reported as grades, but students earn those grades through marks. The number of marks needed for a particular grade is called the grade boundary.
That boundary is not usually a fixed percentage. It can move from one exam series to the next because exam papers differ in difficulty, students perform differently, specifications change, and some qualifications use different routes or maximum marks.
This guide uses the supplied 2022–2026 GCSE grade-boundary report to explain what the figures can tell us, what they cannot tell us, and how students should use them during revision.

What is a GCSE grade boundary?
After GCSE papers have been marked, exam boards review the papers and the marks achieved. They then set the boundary for each grade. For example, if the grade 4 boundary for a paper is 60 marks, a student who scores 60 may receive a grade 4, while a student who scores 59 may receive a grade 3.
The boundary belongs to that specific exam series. It does not mean that every future paper will require exactly the same mark.
This is why a student should not interpret a boundary as “I only need 60 marks.” A better interpretation is: “I should be working comfortably above the recent boundary, while improving the knowledge and exam technique that earn those marks.”
Why grades 4 and 7 are anchor points
Grades 4 and 7 are the two most useful anchor points when explaining the GCSE 9–1 scale. Grade 4 broadly links to the old grade C standard, while grade 7 broadly links to the old grade A standard. These reference points help awarding organisations keep standards comparable between the old and new grading systems and across exam series.
That does not mean that every other boundary is calculated by taking a fixed percentage of the distance between grade 4 and grade 7. Exam boards use the full range of marking and awarding evidence, together with the requirements of the qualification. The important idea is that grades 4 and 7 help anchor the overall scale, so a change in one boundary should not be read in isolation from the others.
For students, this makes grade 4 and grade 7 useful checkpoints. A grade 4 is commonly treated as a standard pass, while a grade 7 is a strong result broadly comparable with the old grade A. The boundaries for grades 5, 6, 8 and 9 still depend on the subject, paper, tier and exam series.
What did the 2022–2026 report find?
The report compares final qualification rows from AQA, OCR and Pearson. Component rows were excluded, and the analysis focuses on comparable subject-level boundaries.
Across many of the comparable qualifications, grade 4 and grade 7 boundaries finished higher in 2026 than in 2022. The strongest sustained increases were found in several OCR science and Mathematics series. AQA showed a steadier upward pattern, while Pearson was flatter in some of the complete series.

These are raw mark movements. They should be read alongside the maximum mark, tier, specification and exam route. A higher raw boundary does not automatically mean that the qualification became harder.
Why do grade boundaries change?
Paper difficulty
If an exam paper is more demanding than the previous year, a boundary may be lower. If students generally find a paper more accessible, a boundary may be higher. The purpose is to keep grades reasonably comparable between exam series.
Different specifications and routes
The same subject can have different papers, tiers, option routes or specifications. AQA English Literature and Pearson English Literature are good examples from the report: their maximum marks and available routes changed, so comparing raw marks alone can be misleading.
Maximum marks
A boundary of 75 out of 160 is not directly comparable with 75 out of 120. For qualifications where the maximum mark changed, compare the boundary as a proportion of the total and check that the paper route is the same.
Foundation and Higher tiers
Foundation and Higher papers do not offer the same grade range. Foundation qualifications generally do not award grade 7, so a grade 7 boundary is not applicable. Students should therefore compare their marks with the boundaries for the tier they are actually taking.
Combined Science grading
Combined Science uses paired grades such as 9-9, 5-5 and 5-4. Its thresholds should not be treated as ordinary single-grade boundaries. The report excludes Combined Science from single-grade trend claims because the board’s paired-grade labels need to be interpreted directly.
Should students aim for the boundary?
No. Grade boundaries are useful reference points, but they are not ideal revision targets.
A student aiming for a grade 6 should practise until grade 6 work is secure across different topics and paper styles. They should also aim for a margin above the most recent boundary because the final boundary will not be known until after the exam.
For example, if recent grade 6 boundaries sit around a particular mark, a sensible plan is to build reliable performance above that level in timed practice. The exact margin will depend on the subject, tier, paper and the student’s current strengths.
The most useful questions are:
- Which topics are currently losing marks?
- Are errors caused by missing knowledge, weak application or exam technique?
- Can the student explain why an answer earns marks, rather than only remembering a final answer?
- Is performance consistent across full papers, not just short topic tests?

How to use grade boundaries during revision
- Find the correct series. Check the exam board, subject, qualification code, tier and paper route.
- Check the maximum mark. Convert to a percentage only when that makes the comparison fair.
- Review several years. One unusually high or low boundary should not define expectations.
- Mark practice papers carefully. Record lost marks by topic and question type.
- Build a buffer. Aim to perform above recent boundaries under timed conditions.
- Use teacher feedback. A tutor or teacher can identify whether the next improvement is content knowledge, precision, structure or time management.
What might happen in 2027?
The report’s baseline forecast suggests that many AQA and OCR grade 4 and grade 7 boundaries may edge upwards in 2027, often by around 1–5 raw marks. This is a statistical continuation of recent movement, not an official prediction.
OCR science has shown wider historical variation, so its forecast is less certain. Pearson Mathematics is expected to remain near its 2026 level or rise modestly, while Pearson Computer Science appears more likely to remain broadly flat than to continue rising.
Students should not revise to a forecast. They should revise for the specification, practise a range of papers, and aim for secure marks across the full course.
